TROTTING Reality And Reveille Impress At Rangiora

. The Prebbleton trainer, V. Leeming, produced two promising pacers, Reality and Reveille, which won at the Rangiora Trotting Club’s summer meeting on Saturday. Neither horse was in a very strong field, but both raced solidly and won fairly easily in fast time. Neither Reality nor Reveille will race at Christmas, and their next races may be at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s summer meeting on January 4, and 5. They should have little difficulty in extending their records. Both Reality and Reveille are bred to go far, the former being by U. Scott from Gallant Maid and the latter by Light Brigade from Sweet Repose. On Saturday Reality was one of the leaders throughout the First Introductory Handicap and once she took the lead early ,in the run home, she was never seriously challenged, beating Scottish Fair by three lengths. Raced by her beeder, Mr P. Reid, of Hamilton, she is a four-year-old mare by U. Scott from Gallant Maid (the dam also of Crimea), by Gallant Knight from Rustic Maid, dam of several fine winners, including Chamfer, Highland Scott, Scottish Lady (the dam of Scottish Brigade and Scottish Bank), Slavonic, and Helali. Reality was having only her third start for the season when she won on Saturday, and with further race experience she should develop useful form. Reveille was having his first face at a totalisator meeting when he won the Coldstream Handicap. He fought on very gamely in the straight to beat Meadowbrook by a neck in 4min 29sec for the two miles, time only 4 l-ssec slower than that of Quite Obvious, winner of the Rangiora Cup. Raced by Mr J. M. Samson, of Dunedin, who has a very big team of gallopers in work, Reveille was purchased at the annual yearling sales in 1952 for 750gns. Bred by Mrs J. M. Rooney, of.. Winchmore, he is a four-year-old gelding by Light Brigade from Sweet Repose, by Rey de Oro from Merry Rose, by Great Audubon. Sweet Repose is also the dam of Tranquil Lady, Barney Dillon and Sandman. She is closely related to Seacraft, Colleague, Quest, Jacosse, and Zest.

Boot Slips Star Beam, winner of the Cheviot Handicap at Rangiora on Saturday, was lucky not to break at the finish, as one of her knee boots slipped, falling over her off hoof. When she returned to the birdcage a atrap on her other knee boot was undone. Damaged Wheel When Hyperbole returned to tM birdcage after finishing third in the President’s Handicap at Rangiora on Saturday he had a damaged sulky wheel. This no doubt hampered him over the final furlong, and he did well to finish a close third. Name Changed The New Zealand Trotting Conference has approved a change of name for the four-year-old gelding by Indianapolis from Palatial from Devon to Beehive. He raced as Devon-when he finished second to Shirley Dillon in the Hurunui Handicap at Rangiora on Saturday, but if he races during the holidays it will be as Beehive. Disappointing Effort Gainesway, a warm favourite for the Coldstream Handicap at Rangiora on Saturday, did not flatter his supporters at any stage of the* race. He was a little slow early, but was not far from the leaders at any stage of the race. He was hanging badly for most of the race, and when he was switched to the inside at the straight entrance he did no better, and S. A. Edwards did not persevere with him. Gainesway has shown considerable promise in his track trials, and the first time he races well he should win. Wyndham Stakes

The Wyndham Trotting Club will set a new record in Southland when it distributes £4125 in stakes at its autumn meeting in March. This is an increase of £lOOO on those offered at the same meeting last season. The main race on the programme will be a two-mile event for pacers assessed at 4min 36sec or better, carrying a stake of £ll5O. This will be easily the richest race run at a trotting meeting in Southland. The race will also be the tightest class event run in the province. This will mean that horses which would normally have won their way out of Southland classes will be retained in the province for that race. In addition a race of this type should attract entries from Canterbury. The sprint event on the card will be of equivalent class—2min 49sec for one mile and a quarter—and will carry a stake of £650. Won in Australia

Sister Kate, Scotty Belmont, and Qualified were New Zealand-bred winners at Menangle Park, near Sydney, on Saturday night. Sister Kate, a four-year-old mare by Free Fight from Sister Sheila, beat Johnny Volo in the second division of the Beginners’ Handicap after taking 2min 48 l-ssec for the mile and a quarter. Scotty Belmont, a three-year-old colt by U. Scott from Chenlight, beat the Ashburtonbred Super View in the Three-year-old Stakes. Qualified, a member of E. R. Smith’s successful team, beat Wilkena Girl by a head in the Emu Plains Handicap, taking 3min 22 2-ssec for the mile and a half. . Qualified is a five-year-old mare by Logan Derby from Hilda Potts. In Melbourne, Medorina, a Ally by Medoro, beat New Lawn and the New Zealand-bred Explicit in the Duncan Three-year-old Handicap, and the Springfield Globe staNion, Defiance, beat Kamulla in the Glade Handicap. Defiance started at 5 to 1 and Medorina at 7 to 4. Captain Sandy, starting at 8 to 1, finished third to Pacing Peter and Dainty Rose in the Reeves Handicap. The ’ Sandydale gelding started from 60 yards, and he did well to finish so close up in a race over 12J furlongs. Distribution of Tickets

The order of favouritism on the win and place totalisator in the Cheviot Handicap at Rangiora on Saturday, was vastly different from the favouritism on the doubles machine. Star Beam, the winner of the race and a firm 1, 1 favourite, had only 107 10s tickets redeemed on her prospects on the double. She was fifth favourite on the double, and had the same number of tickets as. were invested on the 12, 12 favourite, Child’s Play. The actual favourite and off-course substitute for the double was the 11, 10 favourite, Fair Lead, which carried 156 tickets. The 2, 3 favourite, First At-, tack, was second favourite on the double with 144 tickets, and the third favourite' on the double with 111 tickets was the 5, 5 favourite, Golden Chides. The 3,2 favourite, Bobby Brigade, was fourth fancy on the double with 109 tickets.

There was a big drop from Star Beam and Child’s Play to Adan, the 4, 4 favourite, which had 83 tickets. The 6, 6 favourite, Titania; was twelfth favourite on the double with 41 tickets, and the 7, 7 favourite. Flaring, was ninth favourite on the double with 57 tickets. Among those better backed on the double thafi Titania was the 14, 15 favourite, Starlight, which carried 52 tickets and was tenth favourite on the double. The order for the others in the race

was Auriferous, ■#, 8 favourite and eleventh favourite on the doubleDouble Grattan, 9, 11 and eighth; Preston Lad, 15, 14 and sixteenth; Gay Cobra, 13, 13 and fifteenth; Empyrian,' 18, 18 and thirteenth; Belle Itenarde 16, 16, and seventeenth; Proximity, 17 17 and eighteenth; Tartan, 8, 9 and fourteenth; Banbury, 19, 19 and nineteenth.
