Alleged Support For Subversion

fN.Z. Press Association —Covyjrtght) (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 19. The three Republicans on ai House of Representatives investigating committee asserted today that the Ford, Carnegie, Rockefeller and other big tax-exempt foundations in the United States had “supported subversion.” The Republicans were Mr B. Carroll Reece, of Tennessee, Mr Jesse Wolcott, of Michigan, and Mr Angier Goodwin, of Massachusetts. The foundations exerted “enormous power 7 in moulding thinldng in the United States, and that power was amplified because of interlocking trusteeships, with actual power wielded by professional foundation administrators, said the Republican report.

It said the evidence was piat “the form of globalism which the foundations have so actively promoted and from which our foreign policy has suffered seriously, relates definitely to a collectivist point of view.” Mr H. Rowan Gaither, president of the Ford Foundation, said the committee proceedings were held “in flagrant disregard of the principles of fairmindedness, fair hearings, and fair Play.” Mr Dean Rusk, president of the Rockfeller Foundation, said: “Flimsy allegations have been accepted as fact without the support of trustworthy evidence.”

The Republican report criticised three newspapers which have been sharply critical of the committee’s Investigation. They were the “New York Times,” the New York “HeraldTribune,” and the “Washington Post.” The report also criticised several prominent Americans, including Senator Paul Douglas (Democrat, Illinois). Mr Paul Hoffman, former head of the Ford Foundation, and Mr Edward Murrow, the radio and television news commentator.
