PATROLMEN FOR BEACHES
FIVE APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED
An appeal to the public to heed the advice of the patrolmen appointed to beaches near Christchurch for the holiday period was made yesterday by the Canterbury Surf Life-Saving Association’s publicity officer (Mr L. J. Tointon). The men appointed are:— Waimairi, Mr J. Hughes; North Beach, Mr R. Willyams; New Brighton, Mr D. Hulme; South Brighton, Mr R. Buchanan; Sumner, Mr I. Stewart.
Mr Tointon said the patrolmen would be on duty on Mondays to Fridays inclusive, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., between December 20 and January 29, apart from public holidays and week-ends, when club members would- patrol their beaches. Those appointed were all experienced surfmen, he said, and were all particularly competent. Some had had prev’dus patrol duty, and had effected several rescues. They would watch bathers, and each morning test the beach for the most suitable bathing area before placing the flags. "The public should lake notice of the advice the patrolmen gave, said Mr Tointon, because it would not be given without good reason.
