SWIMMING BATH AT ASHBURTON
Sir,—Will a public swimming bath, fed and drained by water race, be of a high enough standard of hygiene to protect swimmers from foot, ear or skin disorders?—Yours, etc., FOR THE CHILDREN. . Ashburton, December 8, 1954. [The medical officer of health in the Timaru district (which includes. Ashburton), Dr. N. T. Barnett, said .that water from an open race might be used for a swimming bath, depending on the results of a bacteriologicat.and chemical analysis of the water. In any case, the water should be changed frequently, then chlorinated, and kept chlorinated. When dealing with infection of swimming baths, consideration must be given not only to the amount of pollution introduced into the bath from the source of the water, but also that introduced by the bathers themselves. There was no doubt that ear, throat, and nose infections could be spread in any improperly chlorinated bath, said Dr. Barnett All persons suffering from infection should not enter the bath.]
