SMALL NUMBER BORN OVERSEAS •‘The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, December 14. The longest New Zealand residence of persons born overseas at the 1951 census was 98 years—returned by a man and a woman. The next longest was also for a man and a woman—97 years. This information is contained in the fifth volum’e of the 1951 census statistics. The new volume deals with birthplaces and duration of residence of those born overseas. Of the total of 1,938,204 who specified their birthplace, 1,672,962, or 86.32 per cent., were recorded as born in New Zealand. England ranked second, with 125,957, or 6.50 per cent., and Scotland was third, with 44,089 or 2.27 per cent. The only other country claiming more than 1 per cent of the population was Australia, with 35,828, or 1.85 per cent. In the 35 years from 1916 to 1951 the number of New Zealand residents born in Commonwealth countries increased by 816.939, while those born in other countries decreased by 25,385, and persons born at sea decreased by 967.
