N.Z. CREDIT IN LONDON

“LOANS EXTREMELY POPULAR” MR LESLIE LEFEAUX’S COMMENT (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 12. “New Zealand can rest assured of its ability to borrow on the London market if existing conditions continue,” a former Governor of the Reserve Bank, Mr Leslie Lefeaux. said yesterday. Mr Lefeaux, accompanied by his wife; arrived at Wellington in the Ruahine from England yesterday on a Christmas visit to their daughter, Mrs G. F. Nevins, of Taumarunui. “I’ve really been living very quietly in the country in the last few years,” Mr Lefeaux said. However, he had a few observations to make about the Dominion’s high credit rating overseas. “The Dominion continues to enjoy first-rate credit in London,” he said. I “New Zealand loans are extremely popular, and if things go on as they do. you can always be assured of being able to borrow there.” Mr Lefeaux came to New Zealand originally in 1934 to establish and control the Reserve Bank. At that time he was assistant to the Governors of the Bank of England. He remained Governor of the Reserve Bank until his seven-year contract expired in 1940. Later, he returned to England, and he has been living in retirement in Sussex.
