DIONE AND GOLD MOANA WIN Dione and Gold Moana, both of which , are trained at Washdyke, won their divisions of the First Waituna Handicap at < Waimate on Saturday. The more impres- , sive was Gold Moana. which was having j her first start at a totalizator meeting. j Dione was a little slow at the start of 1 the first division, and with one mile to run , he was in sixth position. Local Power was , striding out freely in front, and she stui , had control racing to the straight where < she was closely attended by Clemency, 1 which had moved up smartly after passing 1 the five-furlong post. Petard. Dione, and Scottish Fair, which had been awkwardly ( placed on the inside. ; Local Power was soon beaten in me ( straight, and Clemency was challenged . by Dione and then Scottish Fair. Dione < fought on best to win by half a length. ■ Scottish Fair ran a sound race for ins placing, a neck in front of Clemency, . with a head to Petard, which had always been handy. Next were Local Power, Radiant Lady, Hazel Grattan, and Pursuance. . . Anxiety began best in the second division, but at the end of three furlongs he was joined by Gold Moana. These two were together for the rest of the race. Racing to the straight they were followed by Marshall Craig, Derry Air, and Super Potts, with Van Dyke well back at Ine head of the others. Gold Moana took the measure of Anxiety inside the furlong ana always had him covered, beating him by , half a length. M , Three lengths back, Marshall Craig, which had had every chance, battled on for third, five lengths clear of Super Potts, which did not run on. Another six lengtns back came Van Dyke, which had lost a lot of ground at the start. Derry Air stopped in the straight and finished sixth, well clear of Linendale. Jocoly In Form Jocoly, a place-getter at Kaikoura at her previous start, was allowed to go out at a false price in the Metropolitan Handicap—she paid £6 7s for a win. The Scotland's Pride mare was never far from the leader, Romero, and racing to the nalimile post Jocoly moved up to follow the pacemaker. These two drew right away ’from the others, and at the straight entrance they were four lengths In front of Russell Grattan. Sheffield’s Beauty and Suredale. Jocoly and Romero had a keen struggle all the way up the straight, Jocoly finishing slightly the better to win by a head. Four lengths back Suredale did well to finish third. He broke badly twice in tne final six furlongs and he made up at least 24 yards over the final quarter. He was two lengths in front of Young Atlas, which also finished on from the rear. Witchcraft made up ground for fifth, ahead of Devon, which broke short of the post. Sheffield’s Beauty and Scotch Paree did best of the others, but at no stage of the race did they look place prospects. Stavanger Wins Well Stavanger was never very far away in i the running in the Second Waituna Handicap, and he finished too well for the , others Jn the straight. Farewell took over the running with seven furlongs to run, . and raping to the straight she 'was showi ing the way to Colin Jocund, . Stavanger and Chupra, which broke. Jo- ■ cund took the measure of Colin Grattan , early in the run home and looked likely •to trouble Farewell until Stavanger . finished with a great burst along the. in- ; side to win going away by a length. It - was a most impressive effort on the part ; of the winner, which may be more tnai* useful. , Farewell fought On solidly in the i straight for her second placing, a neck in . front of the strong favourite. Jocund. . Three lengths back came the tiring, Colin • Grattan, wihch had evpry chance. Chupra ‘ was a fair fifth, ahead of, Mara Maru and 1 Georgette, which were never possibilities. Maurice and Gold Doro lost their • chances in the early running. Witchcraft Beata Trotters Witchcraft took tne lead at tne end of i one mile in the President's Handicap, and, . after appearing to be well beaten at the • straight entrace, he came again over the 5 final furlong to hold off Devon by a narr tow margin. The majority of the field > had had enough with six furlongs to run I and racing to the half-mile post Witch- , craft and Suredale drew well clear of their opponents. They began to feel tne ; strain racing to the straight where Devon . had moved up to be handy to Witchcraft. ' with Young Atlas and Suredale well clear , of the others. Devon looked the winner r just inside the furlong:, but Witchcraft i. came again and wore him down to whs J by a neck. Devon's performance was a useful one and much improved on that he had 1*» - corded earlier in the day. lie loons in i line for an early win. He Whs c’*' : ** a Young Atlas, with Suredale holding Romero off for fourth. Amigo, whicn broke several times, was next, clear of Victory, which also made several mistake*.
