WAIRAU MASSACRE

MAORIS RESENT NAMING OF HILL (New Zealand Press Association) BLENHEIM, December 1. Massacre Hill, at Tuamarina, scene of the Wairau massacre on June 17, 1843, is a name of which Marlborough Maoris disapproved. This was said at a meeting of the Marlborough Centennial Committee last night by Mr Ivor Te Puni, of Waikawa, who emphasised that facts should be correct when Maori histories were being compiled. “We know that the hill at Tuamarina is called Massacre Hill, but the Maoris don’t like it.” he said." “There was a fight there, and we know who started it. The Europeans lost the fight, and they called the hill Massacre Hill. Had they won the name would have been Victory Hill. We are very concerned about this—it is a ticklish subject.” Mr Te Puni was assured that the people of Tuamarina were doing their best to stamp out the name. A notice had been erected at the hill, and the Maoris had been consulted to ensure that nothing to hurt their feelings was placed on the notice.
