FIRE BRIGADE’S RECORD MONTH
150 CALLS IN OCTOBER The Christchurch Fire Brigade received a record number of calls—lso —in October this year. In the same month last year 77 calls were received. When Mr W. E. Olds mentioned at a meeting of the Christchurch Fire Board last evening that each time the brigade was called out it cost money, Mr C. Baldwin suggested that, a “fire prevention week” should be held early in the New Year. A request that such a project be instituted on a national basis will be made to the New Zealand Urban Fire Authorities Association. The* fires listed under the headings, dwellings and occupancies, mercantile buildings, public buildings, manufacturing premises, parked motor vehicles and miscellaneous, were 48, compared with 25 in the corresponding month last year. Numbers of fires in other categories were: chimney fires, 18 (compared with 21); hedge, grass and rubbish, 45 (7); special service, 1 (0); automatic false alarms, 16 (15); justifiable false alarms, 13 (5); maliciotxs false alarms, 9 (4>. Mileage totalled 4919, compared with 2657. A total of 19,100 feet of hose, compared with 3450 feet, had been laid for the various fires attended.
