NEW SHIP FOR MISSION
£lOO,OOO NEEDED FOR CONSTRUCTION
DOMINION CONTRIBUTES £36,741 " “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, November 7. Although New Zealand has oversubscribed its contribution towards the building of the new Melanesian Mission ship Southern Cross, still more money is needed before an order for its construction can be placed with the ship-builders in Britain. New Zealand’s target was £35,000. Already £36,741 has been subscribed but the appeal does not close until December 31. Other countries are also contributing to the new ship but most of these are not directly concerned. England has contributed £28,384, the United States £4344, Melanesia £4200, and Australia £406. This makes £69,334 already collected. The cost of the ship will be £lOO,OOO. The money must be available before an order can be placed? The Bishop of Melanesia (the Rt. Rev. A. T. Hill) has already sent a message of gratitude and congratulations to New Zealand for the part the country has played in raising funds. Each of the seven dioceses in New Zealand was given a target for the campaign and only Waikato, Wellington, and Dunedin have reached the target, although their efforts have been such that the Dominion total has been exceeded.
