REMEMBRANCE DAY
Sermon By Bishop Of Christchurch DANGER IN REFUGEE PROBLEM SEEN t J lere , was ever a germ which could breed new wars again it is the refugee problem." said the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) in his Remembrance Day sermon in the Christchurch Cathedral yesterday morning. “It was the World Council of Churches First Assembly that gave one of the earliest proddings to the international conscience regarding the magnitude and the tragedy of the refugee problem,” Bishop Warren continued. “It charged its member churches to give high priority to work for the material and spiritual welfare of refugees, and appealed to the churches in countries capable of securing settlers to influence public opinion towards a liberal immigration policy.
“Much has been done since 1948,” said Bishop Warren. “A million refugees of Europe are now citizens of the United States. Canada, and Australia: of these 100.000 new Americans were directly sponsored by church people, similarly 30:000 in Canada and 4000 in Australia. I am afraid our record proportionately in New Zealand has not been so good. “Thousands of the aged and physics 11 v handicapped for whom in 1948 was no prospect but death are today alive and cared for in special homes in a dozen countries. But there are still 10,000,000 refugees, men and women who have no country of which they can claim citizenship,” Bishop Warren said.
