Cup Day At Riccarton Draws Many Visitors
Saturday was one of the most important days in the racing calendar n df the year in the Dominion—the day on which the race for the New Zealand Cup is run annually at Riccarton. As m previous years many visitors had come to- Christchurch for the event, and these swelled the crowd that attended the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, which was honoured on Satby the presence of Vice-Royalty. The weather in the morning was perfect-calm and warm—but about noon light rain fell, and continued intermittently all day. Gradually coats and a great array of gay umbrellas appeared, but the enthusiasm of the crowd was in no way dampered, and the programme of exditing races was greatly enjoyed. It was a memorable Cup day, one of many in the long history of this great race and of the club. After the principal race, the Gov-ernor-General (Sir Willoughby Norrie) presented the handsome gold cup to Mr and Mrs M. Dentice, joint owners w. r he „ wlnnin g horse. Dormant. Miss Holloway wore a dusky pink frock and a small hat of the same shade. Mrs M. Miss Susan Grigg wore a frock of very finely checked blue and brown sheer and a brown straw hat. Miss Phillida Gould wore a navy summer suit with white outthe wide revers, and a white a c ' oc^e with navy blue tassel. Among the visitors from Hawke’s Bay were Mrs T. H. Lowry and Miss Ann Lowry (Okawa), Mrs G. Chapman (Hastings), Miss Gonda Gordon, who accompanied her hostess, Mrs G. R. Cracroft Wilson, and Misses Susan and Joanna Wilson, and Mrs Bryan Boys, who accompanied her aunt, Mrs J- Mowbray Tripp. A Rotorua visitor was Mrs O’Neill, who was with her sister, Mrs Arthur Thomson, and another North Island
visitor was Mrs Quentin Donald, of Wairarapa. Southern visitors included Mrs Neill Rattray, who accompanied Mrs C. W. Rattray. Also in Mrs Rattray’s party was Miss Anne Ashton, of Wellingtori, 'who has not yet fully recovered from, a leg injury she suffered while ski-ing on Mount Ruapehu in August. Other southern visitors were Mrs R. Irving, of Albury, Mrs G. R. Kingston, Mrs Wilfrid Howell, and Miss Mary Mackenzie, of Timaru, Mrs V. Boyle and Miss Ann Boyle (Geraldine), Mrs Hamilton Sinclair Thomson (Timaru) and her daughter, Miss Sally SinclairThomson, who recently returned home after spending two years and a half overseas.
