CURRENT NOTES

Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, Consul-General for Greece, and Mrs Seddon, returned to Wellington yesterday after a visit to Europe. Mr and Mrs Eric Beaven (Tomes road), who have been for a trip to Britain, will return to Christchurch tomorrow.

Min Gonda Gordon (Hawke's Bay) is the guest of Mrs G. R. * Cracroft Wilson. Riccarton. Mr R. Elliott and his daughter, Miss Sheena Elliott (Fairlie), have returned from a visit to England. Mrs A. J. R. Warren presided at the final meeting for the year of the Christchurch Girls’ High School Barent-Teacher Association. An excellent programme entitled “Carnival” was presented by the North Christchurch Townswomen’s Guild, under fire leadership of Mrs A. Stubberfield. The vice-president (Mr J. Milner) thanked the visitors for an enjoyable evening.

Mr and Mrs L W. E. Noble, of Halswell, celebrated their golden wedding yesterday. They were married on November 5. 1904, at St. Michael's Church. Bootle. Cumberland, England, by the Rev. J. Neale. They have three sons, four daughters, and 15 grandchildren. Miss Lynette Taylor, of Cashmere, returned to Auckland by the Rangitata. She has been on a visit to Britain and Europe with her parents, Mr and Mrs Charles Taylor.. Mr and- Mrs Taylor are returning to Christchurch by way of the United States and Honolulu. The patients and staff at the Templeton Farm School were entertained recently by the Friendly Wives Club concert party, organised by Mrst C. Evans. Ice creams were served to the patients, staff and visitors, and at the dose of the concert each one received a bag of sweets, given by members of the club, and friends. Music was supplied by Mrs B. Butcher (piano) and Mr R. Pierce (piano accordion).

There was a large attendance of delegates at the monthly meeting of the Provincial Executive of the Women's Division of Federated Farmers. Mrs M. E. Orchard presided. A discussion on a memorial to former life members is to be completed at the February meeting. Mr N. C. Clapp presided at the November meeting of the Avonslde Giris’ High School Parent-Teacher Association. Mhsical items were given by the orchestral class trained and conducted by Miss H. Eccles and by the old girls’ chamber music group, also conducted by Miss Eccles. Miss D. Oliver, the official librarian to the school, gave an interesting talk on the administration of the school library. Miss U. F. Townsend, the headmistress, spoke on the benefit the girls obtained from tile use of the library. At the conclusion of the programme a bring and buy sale was held and £l5 was raised. Hie November meeting of the Stratford Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs W. McAllister, Makora street. Miss B. Webb presided. A talk on the cultivation and care of early flowering chrysanthemums was given by Mr L. Clark. Competitions resulted:—arrangement for a diningroom table, A class, Mrs E. F. Ward 1, Mrs A. H. Weir 2. Delegates to the Dominion conference of the Plunket Society which opened In Wellington on Wednesday took a practical step for health. Attractive. colourful refreshments which emphas’sed healthful eating were served for morning and afternoon teas; “We are not merely preaching, we are oractising what we sav.” said Dr; Helen Deem, medica) adviser tq the society. Wholemeal fldur made not only the bread for sandwiches and scones, it was used in sponge cakes. Cream and fresh fruit took the place of icings and sugary fillings. Wholesome spreads made from eegs, cheese, tomato, sardines, and similar items, anpeared in sandwiches and on scones Cheese, nuts, and dried fruits were used in making various biscuits. To conclude the teas, there were portions of fresh apole, carrot fingers, slices of tomato, and lettuce leaves. A demonstration of colour blending : n floral decorations was given by Mrs Merton at the November meeting’of the Wairarapa Garden Club, held at the home of Mrs S. Lawrence, Garden road. Mrs Eric Millton presided. Competition results were:—best bloom, class A, Mrs A.. Nicholls 1, Mrs H. T. Jennings 2, Miss M. Porritt S; class B, M-vM. Godby 1, Mrs J. Russell 2, Mrs E. Robertson 2. Maori day was observed at the monthly meeting of the Linwood Women’s Christian Temperance Union when the Rev. J. Carter gave an interesting talk on the historical baek-—r-d culture of the Maori people. Mrs W. Teague presided.

The final meeting for the year of the Opawa-St. Martins sub-centre of the Red Cross Society took the form of an afternoon party. A bring and buy sale was held to raise funds for the North Canterbury Centre’s building fund.

The E Hine Companions Club for young girls, which meets in the Y.W.C.A. clubrooms, is still attracting new members. ~ About 30 girls attended this week’s meting. After a recent talk given by the president of the Softball Association in Christrchurch, the club has formed one team Which will play its first match this .afternoon. It is expected that a second team will be formed soon. Plans have been made to hold a Christmas party for crippled children at the Y.W.C.A. on December 9. The "entertainment is to be provided by members of the club. An interesting address was given by Mr Max Rogers, editor of the “New Zealand Home Journal” at a meeting of the Writers’ Fellowship. His subject was Short Story Writing. Mrs L. Matthews presided at a meeting of Merry Wives Club of the Christchurch Y.W.C.A. Members made up about 15 attractive Christmas table decorations which are to be given to aged living in their own homes. Mrs H. Wales, centre commanant of North Canterbury voluntary aid detachments spoke on the Red Cross Good Neighbour Service. Mrs N. Sanders presided at the monthly meeting of the Federation of Congregational Women. . Mesdames Eddington. Smi*h, Paddison, Willis and Misses Ci Kingston and E. D. Killner tobk part in a humorous play. Members contributed aprons and feeders for the children at the Templeton Farm School. Arrangements were • made for the Christmas party to be held in December. The hostesses were Mesdames Willmot, Taylor, Kingston and Brown. The resignations of Miss A. Tatham, physical education mistress at Christchurch West High School, and Miss A. E.
