Mr A. Nihotte, the Belgian Minister in New Zealand, and Mrs Nihotte arrived at Auckland yesterday in the Rangitata after a short holiday in Belgium.—(P.A.) Dr. Ralph Clairon Bedell, director of the programme development and review branch in the Division of International Education, U.S. Office of Education, Health, and Welfare, has been appointed Secretary-General of the South Pacific Commission in succession to Sir Brian Freeston.
Dr. C. Aikman, or Wellington, legal adviser to the Department of External Affairs, has been appointed professor of jurisprudence and constitutional law at Victoria University College. He succeeds Professor,. R. O. McGechan, who lost his life in an air crash at Singapore earlier this year. Dr. Aikman, who Is ■ 35, will take up the appointment of February' I.—(P.A.)
The following members of the Dairy Factory Managers’ Registration Board were gazetted last night:—Mr W. Linton, representing the New Zealand Dairy Factory Managers’ Association; Mr D. A. Finlayson, representing the New Zealand Dairy Board; Mr W. Riddet, representing the board of governors of Massey Agricultural College; and Mr J. H. Earl, a member of the staff of the Department of Agriculture. —(P.A.) Mr Ralph Smith, who has previously represented the Canterbury Junior Chamber of Commerce on the council of the senior chamber, was welcomed by the president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce (Mr R. A. Witbrock) last evening When he attended his first meeting as an elected member.
Pastors G'. Doecke and R. Reinfelds will leave this evening for Marton to attend a conference of ministers of the Lutheran Church. Pastor Doecke will address a youth rally on- Saturday evening and will preach at a mission rally on Sunday. The congratulations of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce will be sent to Mr P. B. Watts, of Christchurch, on his election as president of Junior Chamber International. Mr Carl L. Steplock, service manager of foreign operations for the International Harvester Company, Chicago, left Harewood by DC-6 yesterday morning after spending two weeks in New Zealand, From Australia he will go on to the Philippines before returning to the United States. Mr J. J. Chapman, of Greymouth, has been appointed an honorary ranger under the Wildlife Act for the West Coast, Westlahd, and North Canterbury districts.
