AUSTRALIAN BREEDER’S PROPOSAL SHELVED (N.Z.P.A. —Reuter—-Copyright) MELBOURNE, November 4. A proposal that geldings be readmitted to the AJ.C. and Victoria Derbies has been shelved by the Australian Racing Conference. The proposal Will be considered when the conference reassembles in Sydney in the autumn. The Australian Bloodhorse Breeders* Association sent the proposal to the conference. Geldings have been barred from the A.J.C. and Victoria Derbies since 1929. The decision did not come into force until after the success of Ammon Ra In 1941, because nominators had to be given two years’ notice. The view taken at the time was that the Derby should be open only to colts or fillies which were able to reproduce and pass on their characteristics to their progeny. The ban was imposed because of the sweeping successes of Phar Lap, which won both Derbies in 1929 and went on to become Australia’s best horse.
