COMPENSATION FOR MALTSTER

CLAIM AGAINST BREWERY SUCCEEDS Judgment for the plaintiff, Ernest Albert McGeorge, in a claim for compensation against New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., has been given in the Compensation Court by Judge Dalglish. The claim was based on loss of earnings resulting from dermatitis alleged to have been contracted in 1952, in McGeorge’s employment as a maltster for the defendant company, and the need to change to lighter work after July 13, 1953. “In my opinion plaintiff is entitled to compensation in respect of the dermatitis which he developed while employed by defendant,” said Judge Dalglish in his reserved judgment. The case was heard in Christchurch on October 7. Mr H. W. Thompson appeared for McGeorge, and Mr E. E. England appeared for New Zealand Breweries. “In his statement of claim, plaintiff asks for compensation based on loss of earnings and he also, in the alternative, asks for compensation on a quasi-schedule basis. He is entitled if he so desires to have an estimate made before he elects to take compensation thereunder. I will therefore adjourn the case sine die in order that such an estimate may be made if so desired,” said Judge Dalglish.
