THE ANTARCTIC
Sir, —Regarding the recent United States proposals' for an Antarctic expedition to be based in the Ross Dependency and two other regions, Mr Webb states that he will give the United States his full co-operation. I suggest tha| he resigns his country’s claims in this region and hands them over to the United States Government. Since 1923, when New Zealand first received rights in this valuable area, she has neglected the trust given her scientifically to develop it. Since that time there have been three shore-based expeditions in" the dependency; each has been American. Could something not be done to further New Zealand’s interest in this vast unused territory we claim, or must it be doomed to be a testing ground for the hydrogen bomb?—Yours, etc., B. C. FRASER. Lyttelton, November 1, 1954.
