TROTTING Lucky Spot Wins Cup At Kaikoura Meeting

The Dillon Hall four-year-old, Lucky cnet, gained his second win for the 2asOT when he held off Count Gratun by a head in the Kaikoura Cud -he main race and first leg of the double at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s annual meeting yesterday. Lucky snot was always handily placed behind the pacemaker, Grattan Arrow, and once into the straight he soon worked clear. Once he was in front he was inclined to race lazily, but he lasted long enough to hold off Count Grattan bv a head. Lucky Spot is a half-brother to a grand performer in Soangetaha and Jther winners in Camille and Prince Polka He is raced by his breeder, Mr J. X. Ferguson, of Akaroa, who refused 1500sns for him when he was offered at the yearling sales at Addington. Lucky Spot was penalised to 36 yards in the President’s Handicap later in the day, but he could not catch the pacemaker. Count Grattan, which won really well. Lucky Spot’s trainer, N. L. Berkett, had a most successful day, winning also with Hula Rose and Dinnie Daley, the only other horses he had at the meeting. In a pool of 20.483 J 10s tickets on the first leg of the double, 6643 were invested on Lucky Spot. Of these 1551 were reinvested on Kauru Boy, winner of the second leg, the Keenan Handicap, the successful combination returning £lO 18s for £l. There were three major upsets during the day. These were caused by Virtuous. Centennial Star and Banbury. Both Virtuous and Centennial Star were driven by D. G. Jones, who trains the former. The meeting was held in fine weather before a fair attendance. The track was hard and fast. Totalisator investments for the day amounted to £13,396, compared with £15,244 last year. Lucky Spot’s Win

The Dillon Hall gelding, Lucky Spot, was never far away in the running in the Kaikoura Cup Handicap, and he held on well to win narrowly from the faster-finishing Count Grattan. Pennyfare and Shillelah lost ground at the gtart, and Lucky Spot took a few strides to settle into his gait. Air .Raider began best, but at the end of ■two furlongs the backmarker, Grattan Arrow, pulled his way round the field to take over the running. He set a i solid pace, and with five furlongs to run he had put a break of five lengths on Count Grattan and Lucky Spot, with Pennyfare racing past the tiring Air Raider. Lucky Spot moved into second place, and followed Grattan Arrow into the straight, with Count Grattan and Pennyfare well clear of the others.

Lucky Spot took the measure of Grattan Arrow about the furlong, and looked in for an easy win until Count Grattan put in his claim. The lastnamed finished with a fine burst and failed by only a head.

Pennyfare battled on in the straight for third, a length and a half behind Count Grattan, with a length to Grattan Arrow and. a long gap back to Shillelah, which just shaded Air Raider.

Sprint to Count Grattan Count Grattan avenged his defeat earlier in the day in the Kaikoura Cup when he led practically from end to end in the President’s Handicap. Grattan Arrow broke a hopple soon after the start and Pennyfare was a little slow. Count Grattan was soon in control, and at the end of four furlongs he was followed by Shillelah. Air Raider, Lucky Spot, Pennyfare, and the galloping Grafts-' Arrow.

’hillelah dropped out with half a mile to run. and Count Grattan was closely att " ed by Air Raider. Lucky Spot, and T'nnvfare racing to the straight. Count (rattan put a break of two lengths on Spot racing to the furlong, and although Lucky Spot put in some good
