PETROV SPY INQUIRY
Missing Witness May Be In N.Z. (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY. November 1. A company director, John Skolnik, told the Royal Commission into Espionage today that he had heard that Walter Seddon Clayton, whom the commission is seeking, was in New Zealand. He said he had known Clayton for about 18 years and had lent him £5OO to build a shack in the country. He last saw Clayton* about 18 months ago and had since heard it mentioned that he was in New Zealand. “With Communist control of the Seamen’s Union it would not be difficult to smuggle a person on board a ship,” he added. Mr Justice Owen said Skolnik had been called only because he had lent money to Clayton. There was* no imputation against his reputation, patriotism or integrity. ’~’bis afternoon the commission held a private session to hear evidence on the transmission of information from the Department of Defence.
