Oct. 30 India has drawn Russia’s attention to a “false account” of Gandhi m the latest issue of the Soviet encycloPa Gandhi, who was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic on January 30, 1948, is described in the encyclopaedia as a “reactionary" who betrayed the inter-ests-of the Indian people to British imperialism. The Indian Government has particularly drawn the attention of the Soviet Embassy in New Delhi to passages which said the Indian leader “aped the ascetic” in his private life and “his role in the movement for national liberation reflected a betrayal of the Indian middle classes and liberal landowners in general.” India has told the Soviet Government: “Such a false account of Gandhi is completely counter to professed Soviet friendship and respect for
