PROPOSED VISIT BY GERMAN RUNNERS

NO REPLY TO INQUIRY FROM N.Z. (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 31. The Western German Amateur Athletic Association has not replied to New Zealand’s invitation for Western German athletes to compete in exhibition meetings at Auckland and Hamilton. Only three weeks are left before the proposed meetings. The Germans are touring Japan and two or three of the team are expected to compete in Australia. The Germans it is hoped to bring to New Zealand are Heinz Futterer. the European 100 metres and. 200 metres champion, and Bert Teines, the Western German 110 metres and 200 metres hurdles champion. The secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association (Mr George Geddes) said that the invitation was sent early this month, but he had heard nothing since. The president of the Auckland Centre (Mr Eric. Horan) said his executive would discuss .the matter on Tuesday evening. If by that time no reply was received, the executive would urge the New Zealand Council to endeavour to secure some other Inteniational athletes.

CANTERBURY CENTRE SHEETS The whole question of transport to Australia for the 1956 Olympic Games was receiving close attention, said a report from the New Zealand Olympic and Empire Games Association, received at a meeting of the Canterbury Centre New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. “It is too early to say whether a vessel will be available to go to. Melbourne.” said the report. “However, we are investigating the position very fully.” Advice has been received from the Australian Amateur Athletic Union that it expects shortly to be in a position to advise on the availability of J. Landy, «JVernon. J. Bailey, and H. Hogan for a tour of New Zealand. Mr W. D. Johnston waa appointed manager of the Canterbury team to compete against South Canterbury at Timaru on November 20. The team will be selected from club nominations which will close on Monday November 8. It was intended to hold another national coaching school, reported the president (Flight Lieutenant T. E. Lunn). Advice had been received from the Department of Internal Affairs that a grant of £250 had been made to assist the school which Will be held in Wellington from about May 7, next year. March 26:—Canterbury College championships and open handicaps.
