AMBERLEY SHOW

RECORD ENTRIES AND ATTENDANCE STOCK IN GOOD CONDITION Record entries, a record attendance and a record gate marked the fiftysecond show of the Amberley Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show on Saturday. The show was held in very hot weather and a light north-westerly wind did nothing te bring the temperatures down. 4 Entries for the show this year totalled 2125 as against 2079 last year. Pony classes, becoming increasingly pdpular at all shows, showed an increase in entries of nearly 100, and every other section, apart from, the light horse section where there was a slight drop, also showed increases/ Only one section had no entries—that for draught horses. Since 1941, only one draught horse has been entered at the Amberley show. The gate takings were £173, compared with £126 last year.

Judging by the comments of, the judges, the dry weather has had little effect on the quality of stock shown. In every case judges praised the ex* hibits. Judges comments on the various sections were:— Sheep.—Flock sheep (judge, Mr A. E. Ralph): “The strongest class of flock sheep I have ever had to deal with. Full credit must go to the district and exhibitors. Fat lambs (judge, Mr D. McKay): “A very good class of sheep and just what is required for the Smithfield market now that we are back in the open market. The fat lamb section was the largest I have ever judged, but there was not much competition in the sheep.” South Suffolk and Suffolk (judge, Mr J. J. Crotty): “I was very pleased with the classes of Suffolk and South Suffolk sheep and the condition in which they came forward. Exhibitors must be congratulated.” Cattle (judge, Mr A. Horn): “A great Jersey- exhibit and as good as you would find at any show. It was astounding to come from the North Island and find such a fine exhibit at a small show. The champion cow was verjr good and conformed strongly to breed characteristics as well as dairy conformations. The reserve champion was’ also a nice little cow, but it could have been shown in better condition. The champion Ayrshire bull was also a lovely animal.” The following were the results: — SHEEP Merino (Judge: Mr J. R. Todhunter, Rakaia.) Ram, under 16 months (2): D. L.
