TROTTING Johnny Globe Records Smart Trial For Cun
(.Johnny Globe brilliantly ran one mile L a half at trials held at Addington Eterday by the Canterbury Owners' Uj Breeders' Association. Other imLressive efforts by horses engaged at Zealand Cup meeting were Ejuceus. Battle Cry, Vodka, and fcLjag Charles. Kfter smartly, Johnny fecbe was not headed in the free-for-Ej for horses in cup class. Young KL r jes was slow, and Denbry lost a jCyards at the start. With six furto run. Johnny Globe was pacing Kjortablv ahead of Our Roger. Star VZ Denbry. Lady Rowan, Young Charles, and Zulu. voting Charles began to move up in the back straight, but he was still a Lei way from Johnny Globe at the iraight entrance. Johnny Globe was easing right up at the post, four lengths j.’ frcnt of Young Charles, which ran excellently over the last half-furlong. Johnny Globe, which appeared to ia ve taken no harm from his race in he Hannon Memorial on Mondav. laced the mile and a half in 3min see the last half-mile in Imin Isec. nd the last quarter in 31sec. Though te will start from 48 yards, he must e conceded a great chance of wining the New Zealand Cup. a race a which he has had very little luck a three appearances. Young Charles, which appeared to ave done plenty of work, should be nproved as a result of the run. his econd appearance in public since rngust. A high-class pacer on his day, ie will be a very fit horse for lingtofiOur Roger, which had trailed Johnny }lobe all the way, held on for third, Ive lengths behind Young Charles, rfth two lengths to Star Rosa. Five
fflgths back, Zulu shaded Denbry at he post, with another gap to Lady lowan. Denbry was always under a iold, and he could have finished much loser had his driver asked him for in effort Battle Cry’s Trial Battle Cry recorded a fine trial for -is engagements in the main races for rotters at the cup meeting when he inished on strongly along the rails to >eat his stablemate, Fingal’s Cave, in he 2min 52sec class trot. With six furlongs to run, Signal jght, which had been left clear when airy Dell broke at the end of two irlongs. was three lengths in front i Fingal's Cave, with two lengths to Eipstream. Fairy Dell. Gold Horizon and Slipstream, neither of which was hurried in the straight, were right up next, well clear of Precaution, with Quick Silver and Fairy Dell next.
Captain Cuddles broke at the start, and he was always a long v/ay from the others. Caduceus in Form
Caduceus, which was badly checked at the straight entrance in the Hannon Memorial at Oamaru on Monday, made short work of his opponents in the 3min 18sec class pace. He was a little slow to begin from 24 yards, and he was forced wide at the end of 70 yards by a breaking horse. Roschana began best, but at the end of three and a half furlongs, Trixie Milne took over. She was joined by Caduceus with seven furlongs to run, and a furlong further on the latter worked clear. He was followed through by his stablemate, Fallacy, which joined him in front racing to the half-mile post, where they were followed by Trixie Milne, Onward. Roschana, Brave Company, Mecca Chief, Ohio, Jack Peterson, and Poranui. Caduceus, which should win several races at Addington next month, always had his opponents covered in the straight, and he won as he liked by a length after taking 3min 16sec for the mile and a half, the last half-mile in Imin 2 2-ssec, and the last quarter in 30 3-ssec.
Brave Company, which had lost grotind early, finished strongly for second, a length in front of Onward, which finished with a good burst over the last 100 yards. Two lengths back. Fallacy, which looked in need of the run, held on for fourth, just ahead of the fast-finishing Ohio, with Roschana, Mecca Chief, and Jack Peterson next ahead of Poranui. Battleground broke hopelessly at the start, and he was always a long way back. Girl Black Wins Girl Black, which has been rather disappointing so far this season, led over the last mile and a quarter in the 3min 23sec class pace and she was running on strongly at the post a length in front of Gay Lad, which came home strongly. Another length back. Silver Circle finished third, ahead of Warren Grattan, with Maestro, Moss Hall, and Prince Charming next, ahead of the breaking Trout Stream. Girl Black, which looks well forward, took 3min 19sec for the mile and a half. The last half-mile took, Imin 2 2-ssec and the last quarter 30 3-ssec. It was a smart effort, as he has seldom raced well in front. Gay Lad, which also looks to be returning to his best form, finished on very strongly, and he may soon win. Of the others, none impressed more than Moss Hall, which looks in need of a race or two to bring him to his peak. Usually a reliable beginner, he broke early, but soon settled into his stride. He was running on well at the post, and may soon show form. - Vapour Trail, a most impressive winner on the first day at Oamaru
last Saturday, was too good for his five opponents in the 3min 27sec class pace, and he won very easily in 3min* 21 l-ssec for the mile and a half after easing up over the last six furlongs. Vapour Trail took Imin 2 4-ssec for the last half-mile and the last quarter in 31 4-ssec. He should soon win again.
Second to Vapour Trail was Marionette, now a member of A. M. Purdon’s team, with four lengths to Icicle Lad and a length to Chance, which was followed in by Jolly Swagman. Cabra gave a sound display of trotting when he beat Madam Grattan by a neck in the 3min 33sec class trot, after taking 3min 21 4-ssec for the mile and a half, the final four furlongs in Imin 3 2-ssec and the final quarter in 31 4-ssec. Cabra and Madam Grattan came right away from the opposition, and they were 10 lengths in front of Quite Soon at the post, with a length to Metropole, which had been the early, leader. General Lee and Shirley Dillon were well clear of the others. The Three-year-olds Royal Minstrel was the most impressive of the 11 horses which started in two heats for three-year-olds. The U. Scott gelding began best in the secon heat, but was soon steadied in behind Dresden Lady. Dresden Lady ran on well in the straight, to have two lengths to spare over Light Nurse at the post, with a similar distance to Royal Minstrel and Camber, which were clear of Majestic and Ninht Owl. Light Nurse did well to finish so close up after losing about 50 yards at the start. However, she was not pacing so well as Royal Minstrel at the post. Royal Minstrel was not asked for an effort at any’ stage of the race and was under a good hold throughout. Royal Minstrel will be a strong contender for classic honours at Addington.
Dresden Lady paced the mile and a half in 3min 23 4-ssec, the last halfmile in Imin 2 l-ssec, and the last quarter in 30 2-ssec.
The first heat was won by the Free Fight colt, Free Agent, which made up ground after an early break. Mareta Hall, which returned to the birdcage with a broken bridle, made most of the. pace, which was very easy in the middle stages. The winner took 3min 32 l-ssec for the mile and a half. There was no speed on until the last quarter, which was run in 32 2-ssec. Johnny Ray finished on for second, a length behind Free Agent. He looks well forward, and should not be long in maiden class.
Most impressive was. Sierra Madre. which finished very fast over the last 50 yards. She was right up with Johnny Ray. well clear of Mareta Hall, with Taurie under a hold next.
