THE THEATRE

Sir—Whether or not the theatrical criticisms written by your dramatic critic have any value is side-stepping the more important issue he raised in his article. Theatrically, Christchurch is half awake. Why is this so? We can stir from our hibernation to attend musical events with enthusiasm which would indicate that we are not equally apathetic in all cultural fields. Since we do not wait to see what others •mink of the National Orchestra’s concerts, why do we do so with the New Zealand Players, whose standard of presentation we know equally w r ell? To shield behind the often-heard excuse that “Christchurch is so conservative” is just not good enough.— Yours, etc., A.F.S, October 26, 1954.
