WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
The Peaks.—Mrs L. Hassall presided over a good attendance at the September meeting of The Peaks Country Women’s Institute. Mrs Duckmanton was appointed delegate to the half-yearly meeting to be held in Hawarden. Mrs A. Hassall and Miss Crean were appointed group delegates for the coming year. Final arrangements were made for the annual bring and buy. The president reported on the Dominion conference. Hostesses were Mesdames L. Quigley and J. J. W. O’Carroll. Competition results were:—large bloom: Mrs Rogers 1 and 2, Mrs Hewitt 3. Small bloor.. Mrs F. Quigley 1, Mrs A. Hassall 2. Mrs Quigley 3. Cluster: Miss Crean 1. Mrs Hassall 2, Mrs Quigley 3. Waipara.—Mrs Wisdom spoke on her recent tour of Ireland and England at the October meeting of the Waipara Country Women’s Institute. Mrs Thomson presided. A delegate was apopinted to the half-yearly meeting held at Hawarden. A substantial sum was realised from the sales table for the Leper Fund. Competition results were as follows:—jam jar of flowers: Mrs Steel 1, Mrs Scott 2. Bermaline loaf: Mrs Steel. Prettiest blouse: Mrs Hawke.
Pines Heach.—Mrs Martin presided at the October meeting of the Pines Beach Countrywomen’s Institute. Mrs Moor renorted on the half-yearly meeting of the federation, held at Hawarden recently. Donations were made to the housekeeper fund, the Leper appeal, and Miss Jerome Spencer fund. Mrs van Schooten won a competition arranged by Mrs Turton. Birthday sprays were presented to Mescbmes Beavdn, Scott, McQuillan, and Black. Competition results were as follows:—large bloom: Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs Giles 2, Mrs Moor 3. Small bloom: Mrs Hawkins 1, Mrs Weastell 2, Mrs Turton 3. Spike bloom: Mrs Spencer 1, Mrs Turton 2,1 Mrs Taylor 3. Three queen cakes: Mrs wartin- 1, Mrs Beavan 2, Mrs Turton 3. Trfugh of flowers: Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs Moon 2. Mrs Schumacher and Mrs Giles (equal) 3. Indoor bloom: Mrs Hawkins 1. Mrs Bea ven 2. Mrs Taylor 3. Jar of peaches: Mrs Weastell. Snringston.—Mrs T. B. Howson presided at the monthly meeting of the Springston Country Women’s Institute. Birthday sprays were presented to several members. Invitations to Templeton institute’s twenty-first birthday party and to Greennark Women’s Division of the Federated Farmers birthday party were received. A letter from the link in Cumberland was read. A demonstration of painting on various materials was given by Mrs Berry, who also displayed many of her beautiful articles. Mrs C. J. Reesby, who is leaving the district, was presented with a small gift and a spray of flowers. Monthly competition results were:—small bloom: Mrs A. Milne 1, Mrs N. Buckley 2, Mrs J. F. Blakemore 3. Cluster: Mrs Buckley 1, Mrs Blakemore 2, Mrs Howson 3. Spike: Mrs Blakemore 1. Mrs Howson 2, Mesdames Buckley and S. J. Wall (equal) 3. Shrub: Mrs Howson 1, Mrs Blakemore 2. Best bloom: Mrs Blakemore. Decorative, arrangement of blossom : Mrs Elliot 1, Mrs A. Milne 2. Cooking (butter sponge): Mrs M. W. Dickie 1, Mrs Buckley 2. Mrs Howson 3. Craft, soft toy: Mrs Buckley 1, Mrs Blackmore 2. Hostesses were Mesdames Milne and T. Opie.
