bergelin loses to OTWAY (New Zealand Press Association) o , AUCKLAND, October 25. Sweden beat New Zealand by five matches to one in the two-day lawn tennis test which concluded at Auckland today. Sweden’s only loss was suffered by Lennart Bergelin in the first singles today, when he was beaten by M. A. w- a recen t semi-finalist in the Wimbledon mixed doubles, 4-6, 8-6, 1-6 4-6.
Sven E> av idson, of Sweden, then beat ■ * 4; Barry, to whom he had twice lost m three-set matches, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. Bergelin and Davidson won the final match, the doubles, by beating Otway and J. E. Robson, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Otway gained the finest victory of his career wtien he beat Bergelin. Otway took tne net at every opportunity, and nis baseline game stoed up well to Bergelm s drives. Otway took the first set at 6-4 and had a great chance of winning the second when leading 7-5, 40-15. Bergehn saved the first set point. Otway then played a drop shot that some considered won him the point, but it was ca .ycd out ’ and °tway finished the game with two double faults. Bergelin won the next two games for the set. Bergelin won the opening game of the third set, but Otway, driving beautifully and killing shot after shot at the net, won six games in a row. Services were held to 4-all in the fourth set, when Otway broke through Bergelin’s service to win the match. Apart from the opening two games, which he won, Barry never appeared to have a chance against Davidson, who played some beautiful drives and supported them with a vicious net attack. Robson and Otway, who had taken V. Seixas and M. A. Trabert to five sets at Wimbledon, made far too many mistakes in the doubles. ST. CLAIR CLUB BEATS OPAWA ANNUAL FIXTURE HELD IN CHRISTCHURCH The St. Clair (Dunedin) Lawn Tennis Club beat the Opawa Club by 23 matches to 20 in the annual fixture between the two clubs, played at Opawa on Sunday.
