Production Of Atom Cannon Halted

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) WASHINGTON, October 24. The United States Army has halted production of its atomic cannon, which is now only one of several guns it possesses capable of firing atomic shells. This was announced last night after Mr George Roderick, an Assistant Secretary of the Army.' told a Republican rally that the 280 mm. atomic cannon was “only the first of a series of guns capable of delivering an atomic projectile.” An Army spokesman told correspondents later that the manufacture of the 280 mm. weapon had been stopped because “current requirements” had been met. The number produced so far is believed to be about 50. The cost of each cannon is believed to be more than 800,000 dollars.
