N.S.W. To Abolish Death Penalty

Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct 25 The New South Wales Cabinet has decided to introduce a bill into the State Parliament to abolish the death penalty, i The State Premier (Mr J. J. Cahill) said tonight that the bill would provide a penalty for any "criminal offence, including murder and rape to be life imprisonment. A parole board would then decide how long a convicted person would remain in gaol as under the present system. Mr Cahill said the legislation would not be retrospective. “We want to do away with the present system of a judge having to sentence a man to death when the sentence is never carried out,” he said. The policy of successive Labour Governments in New South Wales has been commute death sentences to life
