ATTACK BY McCARTHY

(Rec. 12.15 a.m.) o WASHINGTON, October 24.! Senator Joseph McCarthy yesterday made his first open counter-attack* against Senate censure recommendations by seeking to cross-examine Senator Arthur Watkins. Senator Watkins was chairman of' the special Senate committee which proposed that Senator McCarthy be, publicly reprimanded by the Senate for his conduct in office. Senator McCarthy, in a letter, “invited” Senator Watkins to appear before the Senate Permanent investigations Sub-committee some time before November 8, when the Senate will reconvene to consider the Watkins committee’s recommendations. Senator McCarthy said he wanted' to learn why the committee said Brigadier-General Ralph Zwicker was not responsible for the honourable discharge of Major Irving Peress. Major Peress had refused to tell Senator McCarthy whether he was a Communist.
