CHRISTCHURCH TEAMS BEAT ISLAND BAY Two Christchurch senior softball teams on Saturday withstood challenges from the Island Bay Club, Wellington. The women’s sepior game was won by Vanguard, which overwhelmed Island Bay by 24 runs to 2. Vanguard was brilliant in the field, and gave an excellent exhibition of powerful batting. Home runs were hit for Vanguard by M. Arnold and a newcomer to the game, W. Winifred, who also showed promise in the field. In the men’s senior game, Papanui also had an overwhelming win over Island Bay by 33 runs to 3. Papanui was brilliant in fielding and batting. Papanui scored five home runs, three by W. Jones, and the others by D. Shaw and G. Cooper. Fielding errors aided Papanui.
