GREYMOUTH CLUB

ROYAL PRESENT WINS TWO RACES (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, October 24. Royal Present outdistanced the field in i the principal event and first leg of the double, the Spring Handicap on the first day of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s spring meeting at Victoria Park yesterday. Later in the day he beat the sprinters in the Dash Handicap. Tucked in behind the leaders on the first circuit in the Spring Handicap, Royal Present gradually pulled his way to the front after five furlongs. He put a break on the field with three and a half furlongs to run and was not troubled to win by five lengths from the bracketed pair, Ductile and Swingalong. Delia Grattan finished on into fourth place, a neck away. Royal Present is a five-year-old colt by Josedale Grattan from Dillon Derby and is raced by Mr R. A. L. McKinstry, for whom he is trained at Belfast by J. G. Hampton. A Westport-owned and trained mare, Black Rose, which won at the recent Westport meeting, was at surprisingly long odds in the Advance Handicap, the second leg of the double. She had an excellent run through the field in the final stages of the race and finished on resolutely to win by a length and a half from Nona Grattan, with the unlucky Pennyfare finishing on in third place, a length back. Robert Junior and Flower Girl were next to finish. Pennyfare was slowest away and lost about 36 yards at the start. The successful double. Royal PresentBlack Rose, returned a dividend of £169 2s 6d for £l. The meeting was held in fine, though overcast, weather, and there was a good attendance. The track was fast. The totalisator handled on-course £24,559 10s, including £2020 on the double, compared with £22,193 10s last year.
