NEW ZEALAND-MADE BUTTONS
TAILORS “REASONABLY SATISFIED” (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 5. , 4 r ack ran 8 e in novelty and fancy buttons for women’s fashion garments has been the main criticism of New Zealand-made products,” a spokesman for the Department of Industries and Commerce today told a Board of Trade inquiry into import duties on buttons. It was also claimed, said the spokesman, that high-quality imported buttons for expensive men’s suits were not available, ard there was criticism of leather buttons and the laundering capacity of white buttons used on summer frocks. Generally, however, merchants and the clothing trade seemed reasonably satisfied with the quality of New Zea-land-made buttons, the department reported. Last year buttons valued at £187,647 were produced in New Zealand, and £54,887 was spent on imported buttons.
