NEW EQUIPMENT FOR ARMY
CENTURION TANKS AND ARMOURED CARS “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, October 5. More Centurion tanks, the latest Mark 7, are to be brought to New Zealand. They will join the three Mark 3 Centurions at Waiouru military camp. At the Armoured Corps conference at the week-end Major W. C. W. Sloan, director of the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps, said that when the Centurions arrive they will be kept up to date with modifications. They are intended as mobilisation equipment, but will also,be available for training. The First Armoured Car Regiment (New Zealand Scbttish) is to be reequipped with two new types of armoured cars, which will gradually replace the regiment’s Daimler scout cars. Major Sloan said the conversion of the New Zealand armoured regiments to the new equipment was bound to be slow, being dependent on the finance involved and the production capacity of the factories in Britain. The conversion also involved the problem of maintenance. The vehicles are to be equipped with two new types of very high frequency radio.
