Lord Montgomery To Train Germans
PARIS, October 4. Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery will be in charge of the collective training of the new German Army .when it comes into being as part of the Atlantic Treaty Organisation, officials of Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers in Europe (S.H.A.P.E.) said in Paris today. This will not mean a new appointment. The Field-Marshal is already in charge of the training of N.A.T.O. forces, as Deputy-Supreme Commander in Europe. But in the case of 13 of the other 14 N./-T.O. nations—lceland has no army—only part of their forces are under S.H.A.P.E. For Germany, the London agreement will put the whole -army under N.A.T.O. supervision. Officials expect that in time German officers and men will be included in the staff of the Supreme Allied Commander (General Alfred Gruenther) outside Paris.
