THE FASTEST HALF-BACK
Sir,—Judging by letters recently published in your correspondence column, certain of your readers are deeply concerned about the fraction of time involved in the passage of a Rugby ball from the hands of a halfback to those of his supporting fiveeighths. That grown men, possibly even fathers of families, should bedevil a once clean and congenial pastime with such statistical balderdash passes the limits of comprehension. However, it takes all sorts to make even “God’s Own Country”; so perhaps someone will tell me what percentage of wing three-quarters have « red hair and a mole on the left cheek; z what, to the nearest 100th of a second, r is the average duration of a referee’s whistle blast; and what is the world’s J record for rapid replacement of dis- J located “pants”—all matters of vital r interest, no doubt, to genuine enthu- : siasts?—Yours, etc., ' M.T. r October 4, 1954. j
