WEEK END CRIME AT AUCKLAND
MORE THAN 12 SHOPS AND OFFICES ENTERED (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 4. During the week-end thieves broke into more than 12 Auckland business premises, opened three safes, and stole money and stock in the greatest outburst of week-end crime experienced by the police for many years. This morning detectives received calls at frequent intervals after 7 o’clock. A safe in the Social Security Department’s offices was opened with a key taken from a drawer ,and £BO stolen. Half belonged to the department and ,half to the staff social fund. Intruders took £l5 after hacking off the back of the safe in the office of Suckland Brothers. A sum of £l4 was Jatfen. from the safe in the office of M. C. Stapleton and Company when the thieves found the key. In the other cases smocks, tools, shoes, motor spare parts, six cases of whisky, a clock, and small sums of cash were taken. Nothing was stolen from one office entered, but 55 windows were broken and other mischief done.
