SALE OF ROAD METAL BY COUNTIES

CRITICISM BY TRANSPORT ALLIANCE (New Zealand Press Association; GISBORNE, October 4. The practice of county councils selling road metal to farmers in competition with carriers without having to pay heavy traffic fees, was discussed at the conference of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance at Gisborne today. An Otorohanga remit was approved urging that where local bodies are engaged in commercial enterprise in competition with carriers, the local body should be compelled to pay heavy traffic fees. The secretary (Mr H. C. Campbell) said that where counties used heavy vehicles wholly or principally for road construction, heavy traffic fees were not payable, but there had been cases of those vehicles being used to carry metal in competition with carriers.
