PRESIDENT OF INDONESIA
Resignation Demand By Newspaper (Rec. 10 p.m.) JAKARTA, October 4. President Soekarno’s resignation was demanded today by the independent Jakarta newspaper, “Indonesia Raya.” The “Pikiran Rakjat,” published at Bandung by Soekarno’s foster-son, Asmara Hadi, suggested that the President take some years of rest, “in order to avoid a worsening of the political situation in Indonesia as a result of his recent marriage “to the beautiful 31-year-old divorcee, Hartini, mother of five children. News of the President’s marriage to a second wife, allegedly without the consent of his first wife, Fatmawati, caused a nation-wide commotion. As an Islam, President Soekarno is entitled to marry more than one wife, but a majority of Indonesian society and particularly women’s organisations expressed an opinion that as President he'should not have resorted to polygamy. “Indonesia Raya,” in a lengthy leading article, based its proposal to the President to resign immediately upon persistent press reports that he had married Hartini—in June this year in his mountain resort of Ipanas—before the expiration of 100 days after Hartini’s divorce from her former husband, Suwondo. This 100 days’ period is prescribed by Islamic laws.
