U.S. Citizens Appeal For Atlantic Unity
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.in.) NEW YORK, Oct. 3. An appeal for Atlantic unity was issued today by prominent citizens of the United States. They proposed that N.A.T.0., described as “still basically a military alliance,” be strengthened by closer ties in political, economic, and military affairs. The proposal included use of German defence forces. The appeal urged the formation of a parliamentary Atlantic assembly, representing the legislatures of the eight member-countries of N.A.T.0., and having advisory, powers to discuss “matters of common concern”. The economic proposals were aimed at freer trade among the eight nations. Among'signers of the appeal were the former President, Mr Truman, Mr Benjamin Fairless, chairman of the United States Steel Corporation, Mr Henry Ford, and Mr Adlai Stevenson, titular head of the Democratic Party.
