There was no change in the running until after passing the three-furlong past where Tactician and Young Charles set out after the leaders. Johnny Globe went with them and was on terms with Caduceus as the field straightened up. At the furlong they were still together with Tactician and Young Charles challenging and Gay lad and Midday also handy. Caduceus soon had the measure of the others', a though about half a furlong from the Eost it looked momentarily as though - mß‘ht break when he swung out from the fence. He was soon going v m ?^ain and won by a clear margin. Tactician, which was conceding the leader about five lengths at the halfmile post, did well to finish so close up in a fast-run race. Johnny Globe \a® half a back, disappointing s.tghtlv as he did not run on as well f.' expected Young Charles was more tian a length away fourth, three J;ngths in front of Gay Lyric, with JtTidpav ?nd Gay Lad a similar distance track next Lauder Lass Wins • Law*..received a perfect run vU the way .Presidents Handic -ip and sne waished with a fine run ever the last 'furlong to win by two lengths going J away from Young Sam. 3 ounr Sam led early, but at the end of three furlongs Straight Eight took over. Bronze Indian was sent to the front v ith more than a mile and a half to run and he was closely attended by Straight Eight (rails), Jaunty, Lauder Lass (rails) and Young Sam, Reko < rails) and Grand Monarch. There was no change until the straight entrance where the field bunched. At t ie furlong Bronze Indian was beaten 2nd he was passed by Jaunty. Straight Fight, Lauder Lass, Young Sam, Grand Monarch and Reko were all handy. Lauder Lass soon put in her claim and she Lad too much in reserve for the others. Young Sam. which had never been far away, finished on well for second without appearing likely to trouble the winner. He was a short length in front of Grand Monarch. Fair Annette made up a lot of ground to be only a head back fourth, a similar distance in front of the tiring favourite, Jaunty, which was closely attended by Red Anthony, with two lengths to Reko and Straight Eight. Red Anthony: broke at the start and at the end of about a furlong Frigate broke and checked Cam don, which had been slow away Red Valley broke soon after the start. Speed King Wins Well

The Southland-owned Speed King made a smart effort when he won the Seafield Handicap. He began well and in the back straight he moved fast round the field to go into second place on the outside of Luminous, just behind the pacemaker, Gay Lad, which had taken over from Luminous with just under nine furlongs to run. The field bunched racing to the straight, where horses spread right across the track. At the furlong Gay Lad and Speed King had control, closely attended by Hinepo, Bedivus, Luminous, Merry Gold, Martini and Con Scott, with the others beaten off. In a great race home Speed King fought on gamely for J. A. Carmichael and he had a length to spare at the post over Hinepo, which raced much more generously than she did at Methven the previous Saturday. In a keen struggle for third Bedivus, which had been well back early, held Merry Gold off by a head. The latter lost her position racing into the back straight and she did well to finish so

close up. Luminous, which had trouble getting clear in the last furlong, was not far behind Merry Gold in fifth position, with Con Scott, which had been pushed almost off the course at the straight entrance, right up next, three lengths in front of Gay Lad and Martini, with eight lengths to Blazeworthy and a similar distance to Pacific Pace. Brahman. Vera Scott, Irish Flax, Green Label and Grattan Arrow lost ground early. Coincident in Form Coincident caused a major upset when she finished too solidly for the others in the Elgin Handicap. The Gold Bar mare was about tenth most of the way, not really very far from the leaders. Crown Jewel began best, but Moray pulled his way to the lead with one mile to run. He was beaten early in the run home and Direct Hall was in front racing to the furlong where he was closely attended by Flywheel, Coincident, Esteem, Captain King, Currency, and Stadium Chief. Coincident challenged Direct Hall just inside the furlong and she soon took his measure, running on solidly to win well by two lengths. Direct Hall began very fast from 12 yards and he was never very far away. He ran on well and should soon win. Stadium Chief did well to finish third after losing his position racing to the straight. He looks on the verge of worth-while fomft Captain King, which had trouble working clear, came home well for fourth, just ahead of Flywheel, with three lengths to Esteem, Crown Jewel and Currency.
