MANURE SHORTAGE
Deliveries of superphosphate from the Hornby works are estimated by the company to be at least 10 weeks behind at present. The hold-up has been caused by a serious shortage of labour, mainly for bagging the manure. The company reported this week that the works staff, already somewhat below strength, was handling unusually large quantities of materials into the works for building expansion. The supply of bulk manure is reasonably good, and deliveries in bluk can be made rapidly. Some merchants are taking b -lk manure into their stores and bagging it for their clients, but not many farmers in Canterbury have bulk handling facilities available to them. The manufacturers suggest that farmers could help by taking their manure in bulk and bagging it themselves. They would save £1 Is 6d a ton by doing so. Where possible the company is giving priority with bagged supplies to farmers waiting to sow crops.
