Empire Championship Suggested
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 30. World Rugby may receive its biggest fillip of all time in 1958, says Vivian Jenkins, writing in “World Sports” on the suggestion that an Empire Rugby championship should be staged in Wales the year when the Empire Games are to be held in Cardiff.
"It cannot rank as an official part of the Games because games as such are not admissible. But that doesn’t prevent Rugby authorities from organising their own Empire get-together if they feel so minded. Sponsors of the idea visualise Home Counties (including Northern Ireland), New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, and say Fiji, in a tussle to settle once and for all the title of world Rugby champions. "In spite of the advance in recent years of France and other Continental countries, that is virtually what victory would come to mean,” says the writer.
