“ Pinin Farina Invades U.S.A.” alan j. McGillivray 100 Oxford Terrace ’Phone 75-427 American car designers are in a quandry; the never ending quest to produce something different and new becomes increasingly difficult as each new year’s model rolls off the assembly line. Cars of recent years have all been moulded to the one pattern, with only minor changes to a bumper bar or radiator grille, or some other trifling detail to herald a new model. The huge, low set, rectangular, chromium arrayed productions of the 1950/53 models are losing appeal at an alarming rate and this is a state of affairs that cannot be tolerated if sales are to be maintained. Strangely enough the growing popularity of the English cars in America has provided the clue which has eluded designers for so long. The clean-swept lines, free of adornment, found in the higher-class English productions, has found favour in the U.S.A, and is becoming an ever-growing menace to local industry. However, as English cars are being imported in greater numbers each year, the American designer must find favour by introducing a fashion that, while being totally- different to English styles, is also devoid of any similarity to present-day American conception. The task was made more difficult owing to the need to embody a style which in no way would give a boost to a competitor capable of supplying cars in unlimited numbers. For some time now Italian designed buildings, furniture, clothes, and even typewriters, have been making striking headway in the U.S.A, until now it is not only accepted but is hailed. Here then, was an avenue that offered car designers a new field. Italian ideas were those of the Continent, entirely different from either English or American, but with their own intriguing appeal; competition to the industry of Continental cars was nonexistent, while the very idea of presenting the very latest fashion from abroad would be the greatest advertising sales asset discovered since streamlining was introduced in the middle 1930’5. —To be Continued ALAN J.
