OLYMPIC GAMES VENUE
CHOICE OF N.Z. HELD UNLIKELY (New Zealand. Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 1. New Zealand’s chances of holding another British Empire Games festival in the near future were much brighter than those of the Olympic Games, said Mr C. Rex Moore on his return from a business trip to Canada and the United States, Mr Moore, who was chairman of the organising committee for the Empire Games at Auckland in 1950, was a guest at the Vancouver Empire Games in July and August. He spoke with Sir Arthur Porritt and Mr K. S. Duncan, chairman and secretary respectively of the British Empire and Commonwealth Games Federation, at Vancouver, and they were sympathetic to New Zealand’s request. Sir Arthur Porritt’s personal opinion, however, was that New Zealand did hot have much chance of holding the Olympic Games before the turn of the, century, said Mr Moore. Sir Arthur Porritt told Mr Moore that the future of the Olympic Games in the Southern Hemisphere might well depend on the performance of the Australian authorities at the Melbourne Games in 1956.
One of the greatest factors in New Zealand’s favour for the Empire Games was that It was the only country to make a profit on the festival, said Mr Moore.
