POPULAR BUS DRIVER
Avoriside Residents Show Appreciation PRESENTATION TO MR HARRY DAVIS Avonside residents delayed the departure of the 6.30 p.m. bus from Morris street last evening to demonstrate their appreciation of a popular driver who has retired from the route. Until a fortnight ago, Mr Harry Davis has been one of the two drivers on the route since the Christchurch Transport Board took over the trip four years ago. Last evening more than 100 regular passengers, including mothers with their babies and prams, gathered at the terminus to thank Mr Davis for his friendly and courteous service. Mr C. F. Saunders, for regular travellers, told Mr D'avis ot their appreciation, and Mr J. Stinear pre- 1 sented him with an engraved wristlet watch. About 120 passengers contributed to the fund after Mr Davis left the route. A gift of crystal was made to Mrs Davis. The other driver, Mr A. Williamson, was given a wallet. Chairman of the group that organised the presentation was Mr H. Johnstone. Miss A. Naylor was also an organiser. Mr Davis, who will leave Christchurch soon to join a business in Upper Hutt, was assured in lusty musical terms that he is “a jolly good fellow,” in the view of his Avonside passengers. Before World War TI he was a member of East Christchurch Cricket Club and a Canterbury representative player. He was also a member ot the Albion Rugby Club. He had been employed by the Christchurch Transport Board for 15 years.
