FOUR AUSTRALIANS IN SINGLES

Only four Australians, put of an overseas entry of 16, remained m the United States men’s lawn tennis singles championship when play ended today. The Australians were Lewis Hoad, in the quarter-final round, and Kennein Rosewall, Rex Hartwig, and Neale Fraser in the fourth round, that preceded the quarter-finals. Overseas players eliminated today were Owen Williams, of South Africa, the two Swedes, Lennart Bergelin and Sven Davidsson, and the last of three Japanese entrants, Kosei Kamo. With Hoad in the quarter-final round are Tom Brown and Hamilton Richardson, who each played brilliantly in eliminating Davidsson and Williams respectively in the fourth round. Richardson will meet Hoad in a quarter-final, and Brown will meet the winner of the fourth round match, still to be played, between Neale Fraser (Australia) and Victor Seixas (United States). t y Results today in the mens singles championship were:— , Third Round.—Neale Fraser (Australia) beat Bernard Bartzen (U.S.), 7-9, 6-2. 9-1, 14-12 (postponed in fourth set on Wednesday, owing to darkness); Gardnar Mulloy (U.S.) beat William Cranston (U.S.), 10-8, 6-3, 11-9; Arthur Larsen (U.S.) beat Mike Green (U.S.), 6-2, 6-0, 6- Rex Hartwig (Australia) beat Allen Morris (U.S.), 6-1, 6-4, 6-2; William Talbert (U.S.) beat Kosei Kamo (Japan), 0-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0; Kenneth Rosewall (Australia) beat Gerald Moss (U.S.), 6-2, 6-2. 7- Herbert Flam (U.S.) beat Lennart Bergelin (Sweden), 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Fourth Round. —Tom Brown (U.S.) heat Sven Davidsson (Sweden), 6-3, 2-6, 6*-3. 8- Edward Moylan (U.S.) beat Gilbert Shea (U.S.). 4-6, 4-6, 10-8, 6-4, 6-4; Hamilton Richardson (U.S.) beat Owen Williams (South Africa), 6-1, 6-2, 12-10; Lewis Hoad (Australia) beat Jack Frost (U.S.), 6-3. 6-0, 6-4.
Women’s Matches Results today in the women’s singles championship were:— Second Round.—Mrs Barbara Baker Fleitz (U.S.) beat Mrs Louise Ganzenmuller (U.S.), 5-7. 6-2, 7-5 (postponed after two sets on Wednesday, owing to darkness). Third Round.—Darlene Hard (U.S.) beat Anne Shilcock (England), 6-4, 6-0; Louise Brough (U.S.) beat Mrs Lucile Davidson (U.S.), 6-1, 6-0; Doris Hart (U.S.) -beat Jean Clarke (U.S.), 6-1, 6-2; Mrs Betty Rosenquest Pratt (U.S.) beat Mrs Dorothy Levine (U.S.), 6-4, 5-7, 6-3; Mrs Fleitz (U.S.) beat Karol Fageros (U.S.), 4-6, 6-1. 8-4; Lois Felix (U.S.) beat Sachiko Mako (Japan), 11-9, 6-3; Shirley Fry (U.S.) beat Barbara Breit ’ 'U.S.), 6-4, 6-0.
