DEBATING COMPETITION AT RANGIORA

The Canterbury Council Young Farmers’ Club debating final was held at Rangiora on Wednesday evening. Four teams took part, and a good Standard of debating was heard. The first debate was: • “That Marginal land in New Zealand offers the greatest potential for increased production.” Cannington club (Timaru), taking the negative, beat Flaschbourne club (Marlborough). Cannington club was represented by A. S. Darling (leader), F. G. Ulrich and H. P. McKercher, Flasciiboiirne club by F. Rudd (leader), P. Murray, and B. Schwass. The second debate, “that fertile land should not be taken for urban purposes,” was won by the Methven club (Mid-Canterbury), who took the affirmative, from Rangiora club (North Canterbury). The teams were, for Methven. R. O. Pridie (leader), G. Coppard, and G. Cotterell: for Rangiora, D. F. Power (leader), D. J. Frazer, and M. A. Mclntosh. Methven won the Canterbury council championship with the highest marks,' and will now go forward to the South Island final. The chairman was Mr A. F. Wright, and Mr G. R. Lyall was the judge.
