TRAFFIC SPEED LIMITS

Sir, —Comments made at a road council meeting in Cheviot regarding excessive traffic speeds were surprising in view of the Transport Department’s efforts to check speeding and reduce accidents. The comments referred to could be taken by irresponsibles to mean that this road council approves of speed in excess of the legal maximums. The Picton-Christ-church highway is particularly dangerous, especially north of Cheviot for about 30 miles, more so because of speeding lunatics, who are using this road as a speedway; and there are heavy vehicle operators in this bad lot. (Some have been prosecuted, very properly). Just because a person has a high-powered vehicle, he is not entitled to go around tearing up our roads and killing people. Or is he?—Yours, etc., SAFETY FIRST. August 31; 1954.
