OUTBREAK OF SCRAPIE

INCREASE IN POWERS OF CONTROL STOCK ACT AMENDMENT INTRODUCED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, September 2. More than 100 farms in Southland, carrying some 100,000. sheep, have been shown as having signs of scrapie disease, and the Minister of Agriculture (Mr K. J. Holyoake), in the House of Representatives today, introduced ah amendment to the Stock Act to give greater powers of control over the disease. At present the act provides that the Department of Agriculture may put infected farms in quarantine and cull affected stock, but only for three months. The amendment to the law provides that there shall be no time limit on control measures, as the Minister said the incubation period was up to three years. Mr Holyoake said that the bill had the full knowledge and support of leaders of the farming community. The outbreak in Southland appears to have some connexion with the outbreak in South Canterbury two years ago, according to the Minister. Scrapie is a fatal disease of sheep, and is paused by a virus.
