DILEMMA FACES LABOUR PARTY
POLICY ON GERMAN REARMAMENT
LONDON, September 1. Britain’s Labour Party leaders, pledged to support West German rearmament, are faced with a major policy dilemma as the result of France’s rejection of the European Army scheme, political sources said today. '
The chances of the current line laid down by Mr Attlee and the other official leaders being overthrown by the party’s annual conference later this month have now increased.
Local Labour parties throughout the country have already put forward a host of resolutions for the meeting, which will open at Scarborough on September 27, opposing arms for the Germans. The debate on this issue will be the culmination of months of campaigning against the official policy led by the Left-wingers, under Mr Aneurin Bevan. It was largely on this topic that Mr Bevan broke away from the party’s Parliamentary leadership earlier this year. But in this campaign he has gathered support from many who usually oppose him. including some trade unions.
